The WINNING formula for writing blog posts that convert

Do you feel like you’re spending your precious time writing blog posts that don’t get much engagement, OR worse still…. that don’t bring you any leads?

I get it.

You’re an expert at what you do, and writing blog posts is a great way to showcase your expertise and demonstrate knowledge. But what you really want is to attract more people to your website via your blog, THEN get them to follow the call-to-action which might be make an enquiry or purchase your products.

There is a winning formula to help you write WINNING blog posts that bring you more qualified leads and help you attract your ideal customer.

Strap in, grab yourself a strong coffee yourself, block out 30 minutes …let’s go.

  • Identify a keyword phrase that you want to rank for. Refer to my previous blog about finding the right keywords for your business to help you drill down and find high converting keywords for your business.
  • Now think of a longer tail keyword phrase around your chosen keyword.
    • For example: if your keyword is ‘employee onboarding’, make your blog post title ‘Checklist for employee onboarding’
  • Work on an even catchier title, like ‘The ULTIMATE Checklist for employee onboarding’ or even really specific to the ideal client you want to attract ‘The Ultimate Employee Onboarding Checklist for SMEs.’ The title needs to be compelling to click on and relevant to your audience. There will be a lot of employee onboarding checklists out there, so you want yours to stand out to the kind of customer that you want to attract. The more specific you can be, the more likely they’ll think it’s relevant to them.
  • Now you’ve got your title… go ahead and draft your article. Make it a minimum of 350 words, longer if you can, but no less than 350. Google is favouring more long form content… I know it takes longer, but trust me it works!
  • Make sure you link to internal pages in your website so that Google can crawl to deeper pages within your website.
  • Include where possible, an external link. Maybe you’re quoting an outside source or referencing another company. TIP: Always add the link as ‘Open new window’ so that your website remains in their browser window.
  • Split the blog up into subheadings (make them a H2 or H3) so that it’s easier for your user to read, and Google will pick up on these too.
  • At the end, you’re going to add a powerful Call-to-Action to get them to contact you, book a call or download a guide that you’ve written. Don’t just leave it open ended, the people who read this blog are potential customers for you, so give them a next step to follow.
  • If you have a guide they can download, try to capture their details so that you can add them to your mailing list to send them future content. Remember that not all the people reading your blog will be ready to buy from you. But by emailing them regularly, you’ll keep top of mind.
  • If you’re really savvy and understand how to read Google Analytics data, go and find your top performing blog post. Now use the same keyword in that blog to write an updated version of it. Keep it along the same theme, just completely different fresh content. The point of this is that Google will start to see that you’re writing lots of blogs around this issue… and guess what? It will start to rank in Google for those keywords and bring you more traffic! It takes time, but it’s so worth it.
  • Next, you’re going to complete the meta data in the backend of your website. If you have a WordPress site, scroll down to the bottom, insert your ‘focus keyword phrase,’ then the Page Title (use the title of your blog for this), then insert a meta description. Make it sound really compelling to click on, and use your chosen keyword phrase in that too.

So there you have it, THE winning formula for writing blog posts that will bring you great traffic and leads.

Of course, you may not have the time to be consistently creating winning blog posts every single week. After all, you’ve got to focus on what you do best – running your business.
